Overview
Functional bitumen is modified to improve specific properties such as durability, resistance to temperature swings or adhesion. Conventional bitumen is mostly used for roads; functional bitumen is tailored to particular performance needs.
It is widely used in roofing, waterproofing, industrial applications and specialised road surfaces.
Common types
- Polymer-modified bitumen (PMB): polymers add elasticity and crack resistance.
- Rubberized bitumen: rubber particles add flexibility and shock absorption.
- Fiber-reinforced bitumen: fibers improve mechanical performance.
- Oxidized bitumen: air-blown for greater hardness and waterproofing.
