Why ferrous scrap matters
- Steel production causes about 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
- Blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking uses coke to make iron from ore. It is emissions-intensive, with about 90% of production relying on coal.
- Electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking melts scrap and recycled steel and emits far less, especially when it runs on renewable energy.
- Every ton of scrap used cuts emissions by about 1.5 tons of CO₂.
- Each ton of steel made from scrap avoids 1.4 tons of iron ore, 740 kg of coal and 120 kg of limestone.
